The Irish Heritage School (IHS), with funding from Offaly County Council and Creative Ireland, is delighted to continue their FREE ‘Explore Your Monument’ workshops. As part of this scheme, the IHS invites local Offaly-based communities to explore a locally significant monument in a deeper, experiential, and ultimately more rewarding way.
County Offaly has a wide range of monuments with over 4000 recorded sites including monasteries, castles, limekilns, traditional houses, holy wells, ringforts, etc; all these monument types are equally applicable to this scheme so long as the chosen monument holds a significance to the local community and the application is made by a recognized community group.
The potential applications of the scheme are diverse and could include: architectural and building recording and survey; digital recording/planning; photogrammetric recording of buildings, earthworks, memorials or architectural fragments; graveyard and memorial recording; children’s educational workshops; heritage based videography and photography, etc (see examples here and here).
The workshops typically last two to three days and can have a range of benefits, including:
-
becoming actively involved in research and interpretation of a monument
-
collaborating and working together as a community, with expert guidance
-
learning new archaeological recording skills
-
developing greater community appreciation for both local and regional history
-
creating or contributing to a heritage ‘story’ for your community
-
gathering data which may help with applications for future funding schemes
To learn more simply register your interest in the scheme, after which a member of our staff will arrange a callback to discuss your project in more detail.
